Police Shut Down Court Premises As Judge Sets To Deliver Judgement

There is a high-level of tension at the Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Lagos, today Friday September 18, as the judge is set to deliver his verdict to a petition filed by the People Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate, Segun Adewale, challenging the victory of All Progressive Congress’ Solomon Yayi, in the last general elections.

Although, both Adewale and Senator Yayi are not physically present, a crowd of their supporters filled the court premises as some were seen sitting on the floor as they await the verdict.

Security personnel including officers from the Department of State Security (DSS) have cordoned-off the area and are seen patrolling the court environment to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Adewale is asking the court to overturn the victory of Senator Yayi and declare him the winner of the election.

He lamented that the Independent National Electoral Commission allegedly worked for the APC candidate to win the election which he said was full of irregularities including snatching of ballot papers amongst others.

A security personnel said: “We are here to maintain the peace. Tempers will rise after the judgment while the aggrived persons would likely want to take laws into their hands. We will not allow any breakdown of law and order so we are here to do our job and not intimidate anybody.”
